Quote of the Day: Sept 3, 2018

With respect to the District President’s letter asking to wait for “all the facts” before forming an opinion:

Grace stands for “Godly Response to Abuse in the Christian Environment.”

From their “About Us/Mission” page:

The mission of GRACE is to empower the Christian community through education and training to recognize, prevent, and respond to child abuse.

  1. In responding to the District President’s letter asking to wait for “all the facts” before forming an opinion, the provided quoteof the day brings up the subject of Bayesian inference, based on Bayesian statistics (first developed by Rev. Thomas Bayes, a statistician and Presbyterian minister), that provides a dynamic process in which the truth probability of a hypothesis is updated (either increasing or decreasing) as additional pieces of evidence becomes known.

The DP’s request to wait for “all the facts” appears to be relying on a frequentist inference (i.e., frequentist statistics) in which the truth probability of a hypothesis is determined only after the collection of the (presumed to be all) available evidence.

  2. @Carl – to translate your stats language into English 🙂 what you’re saying is that Bayesian statistics allows for predicting the probable winner of a horse race with increasing accuracy as the horse race progresses and the relative positions of the competing horses are updated in real time, while “frequentists statistics” only makes a determination after the race is over.

    Am I close?
